Possible symptoms of heart disease in dogs

Heart disease is one of the most dangerous diseases that can affect our dogs. There are a lot of diseases that can cause heart problems and one of them is the heart disease. So, before you buy a new dog or adopt an old one, make sure that your dog is healthy and has no health problem.

There are a lot of signs and symptoms that can tell you about your dog’s heart condition. If you are not aware of these symptoms then you should take your dog to a vet for treatment.

Dogs that are having heart disease might be coughing, breathing heavily or even have a rapid heartbeat. You may hear the sound of their heart beating fast. Also, if your dog has a slow heartbeat, then it means that he is in danger of having heart disease.

So, here are some possible symptoms of heart disease in dogs. I am sure that if you can spot some of these symptoms in your dog, then it is better to visit your vet and get your dog treated.

  • Physical resilience becomes less and less. The dog has to stop again and again, long distances during walks become a problem.
  • Breathing accelerates constantly; during physical exertion, the animal sometimes goes into acute respiratory distress.
  • In general, the animal’s pulse is weak. During examinations, the heart sounds are very quiet. May increase to cardiac arrhythmia.
  • The dog coughs. This increases at night and whenever he is agitated.
  • Fluid accumulates around the lungs and in the abdomen (pulmonary edema or ascites; determined by the veterinarian).
  • In the advanced stages of heart disease, the animal also increasingly loses weight.
  • Mucous membranes turn blue. This process is called cyanosis. Is best seen on the tongue or generally on the mucous membranes located in the dog’s mouth.
  • In severe cases, the dog may faint. Circulatory collapses are also possible symptoms. Such conditions often last only seconds and are therefore correspondingly difficult to notice.
