Choosing the right toys to keep a puppy busy. You see your puppy running around with toys in his mouth all the time and you think he must be so happy. But do you think that is really true? Most of the times, when your puppy is playing with his toys he is in fact not happy at all. In fact, most of the dogs play with their toys for three reasons only and those are:

  • To kill time
  • To relieve boredom
  • To satisfy their instinct to “teach” others

Now, how do you make sure that your dog is happy and content? Well, the first thing you must do is to buy him the right kind of toys. There are many types of toys available in the market and each type is designed for a different purpose. Let us discuss the most common types of toys:

  • · Leash toys
  • · Fetch toys
  • · Play toys
  • · Slinkies/Nylabones
  • · Bouncing balls
  • · Rope toys

All these types of toys will help your puppy to release his energy but only few will actually satisfy his instinct to “teach” others. So, what exactly does your dog want to teach you? The answer is simple. He wants to teach you how to be a good Dog parent!

Toys to keep a puppy busy

Now, let us discuss each of the points mentioned above:

Leash toys

These are the toys that are specifically designed to make your puppy or dog happy when he is tied up or tied down. The most common ones are squeakers and rubber balls. I would not suggest buying these for your puppy as they may cause damage to his developing teeth.

Fetch toys

These are the toys that your puppy or dog uses to fetch the things that you throw for him. The most common ones are plastic bags filled with peanut butter.

Play toys

These are the toys that your puppy or dog uses to play with when he is alone. The most common ones are small stuffed animals.

Slinkies/Nylabones

These are the toys that your puppy or dog uses to pull on when he is tired and wants to relax. The most common one is a nylon rope.

Bouncing balls

These are the toys that your puppy or dog uses to chase after the things that are moving. The most common ones are small plastic balls.

Rope toys

These are the toys that your puppy or dog uses to drag around when he is bored. The most common ones are nylon ropes.

In my opinion, the best kind of toys that you can buy for your puppy or dog are the ones that have all of the above six points. So, what I am saying is that you should buy your puppy or dog at least 20 different kinds of toys and give him one of each type of toy.

And, make sure that each type of toy has at least two of the six points that I have mentioned above. That way he will be able to release his energy in a healthy manner and also he will get a chance to satisfy his instinct to “teach” others.

Buy The Right Size Of Toys!

This is very important. Many people buy huge amounts of toys for their puppies and that is a big mistake. What happens when you give your puppy too many toys is that he will become confused and will not be able to differentiate between them. And what will happen is that he will end up throwing away or losing some of them and that means that you will have to buy those toys all over again.

Avoid Choking Hazard!

Many people think that if their puppy or dog has something to chew on then it will not choke. Nothing is further from the truth.
