A thorough exam and an X-ray of the mother’s abdomen will give your veterinarian a good idea of the number of puppies she is expecting.

This is the most reliable method for determining how many puppies a dog can have. Counting the skulls in the uterus is also a helpful way to estimate the number of pups.

While your vet can’t guarantee how many puppies your dog will have, you can ask your veterinarian for an X-ray a few weeks before the expected delivery. X-rays can tell you if the female is pregnant.

After the mother has reached 55 days of gestation, the veterinarian can take an x-ray to determine how many puppies the dog can bear. If your puppy is still alive after this process, you’ll need to call a vet as soon as possible.

The average litter size varies by breed. A Bernese mountain dog can have up to 20 pups. A Pomeranian can have as few as three puppies. A mid-sized breed may have anywhere from three to eight pups.

If your puppy is too large for her womb, your vet will need to give her medication.
