What causes fatty liver?

Fatty liver disease is a condition when the fat cells start accumulating in the liver. This condition is also called steatosis. It is very important to understand that it is not obesity, which is defined as an excessive amount of weight gain.

The excess fat in your dog’s body occurs due to poor nutrition, improper feeding, or consuming fatty food. Your dog may consume too much of carbohydrates which may lead to the formation of more fat in the body.

You need to perform different tests if your dog has fatty liver. For instance, your dog may have high cholesterol level or elevated triglyceride levels. If your dog has yellowish eyes, he may have hepatitis. Your dog may also have a low appetite or be underweight.

Treatment options for fatty liver

If you notice that your dog has fatty liver disease, then you need to take him to the vet immediately. In most of the cases, your dog can recover from the disease in a short time.

You can give your dog a balanced diet which will include more proteins and low-fat food. In some cases, if your dog has been diagnosed with viral hepatitis then you may take him to the vet to get treated. In this case, you may have to keep your dog under observation and take him to the vet if his condition gets worse.
