What exactly happens in valvular heart disease?

So-called valvular endocardiosis is a change in a heart valve.

The valves between the atrium and ventricle are most commonly affected.

Due to a bulging thickening, the valves become leaky and no longer close properly. Instead of flowing into the systemic circulation, blood returns to the left atrium, for example, and cardiac output decreases.
